Guided Winter Walks
Winter in Scotland can be both breathtaking and challenging due to the weather and snow conditions.
Take the stress out of winter walking by joining us on our two-day guided walks. With a fully qualified Winter Mountain Leader, you can enjoy the comfort and safety of having someone making decisions on where to go and keeping you safe in the mountains.
We offer guided walks in the Cairngorms in the East and around Fort William in the West, providing a variety of experiences. We handle the planning and route organisation to ensure safe days, allowing you to simply enjoy everything winter has to offer in Scotland.
Fort William offers superb access for winter walking to areas such as Glencoe, The Mamores, and Monad Liath. Depending on the weather and avalanche forecasts, we will explore the mountains in this incredible area
22nd & 23rd February '25
Location: Based in Fort William
Aviemore is a great base for exploring the northern Cairngorms; from here we will aim to have two days in the Cairngorms but we may also venture further afield to the Monad Liath or even Ben Wyvis to find the best conditions.
8th & 9th March '25
Location: Based in Aviemore - SYHA Aviemore
The Details
We want to ensure you get the best out of your winter walking days. Thus, due to the unpredictable winter conditions, our Guided Walking events will be based on location rather than specific peaks. Our goal is to choose mountains that are safe from an avalanche perspective and to take advantage of the best weather on that day. Having two days allows us more flexibility to climb bigger and smaller peaks.
How will the event work?
Night before event (7pm approx.): We will have a brief, including a kit check ahead of the first walking day, and we will confirm the location and meet point for the 1st day of walking and a rough idea for day 2.
Time: meeting between 7.30am - 8.30am approx. to start the walk
Location: Within the booked region. The exact location will be confirmed at the brief (and based on weather & avalanche conditions).
Accommodation
You can use our discount for the Hostelling Scotland hostels in the area if you are joining us on one of our courses or events. Just use the code AP10 for a 10% discount.
What do you need to join us on a winter walk?
If you are looking to join these events you should have done a winter skills course beforehand and have the basics of moving safely around in winter including the use of an ice axe and crampons, We are there on hand to continue your winter progress but if you are completely new to winter we recommend you to check out our 2 & 5 Day Winter Skills courses.
Fitness
We recommend having a reasonable base level of fitness for winter walking. Having done some mountain walking through the summer is a great starting point.
Walking in winter can be more challenging than in summer. Carrying extra gear, walking on snow, and the cold can drain your energy so it’s important to carry enough food. Please message us with any questions
Winter Kit
In winter we need a bit more kit than summer. Its colder (obviously!), things get wet in the snow & moving around can require specific kit. Essential items such as winter boots, crampons, ice axe are all easily rentable at different stores. This allows you to try out winter activities before making a full investment.

Bespoke Walks
We also offer bespoke events alongside our open events. If you have a particular walk in mind or set of walks get in touch via our contact page and we can discuss how to make this work.
